Terms of Service
Last updated 15 October 2026
In short. You may use DRL-FileSync to back up and reach your own files on your own PC, as long as you follow the rules below. Your files are yours and stay on your devices. Because the storage is a PC you look after, you are responsible for keeping backup copies: we cannot recover files that are lost on your devices, and we are not responsible for the loss of your files, photos or videos. Abuse of the Service is met with a ban. We follow the law, and so must you.
1. The agreement
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and The DRL Initiative ("we", "us") about your use of DRL-FileSync: this website, the Android app and the Windows program (together, the "Service"). By creating an account, installing or using the Service you accept these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not accept them, do not use the Service. If you use the Service for an organisation, you confirm you may bind it. You must be at least 16 years old, or have the permission of a parent or guardian where the law of your country requires it.
2. The service
DRL-FileSync lets you back up photos and videos from your phone to a Windows PC you control, view them in one gallery, store and organise files, chat with people you share the PC with, and reach your PC from your phone, including away from home on plans that include it. Our website provides accounts, pairing of your devices, plans and downloads. Your content travels between your own devices and is not stored on our servers.
The Service is still being developed and may contain errors. Features may differ between the free plan and paid plans, as shown on our website and in the apps.
3. Your account
- Give accurate information and keep it up to date.
- Keep your password and devices secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account, so tell us at once if you think it has been misused.
- One person per account. Others who use your PC should create their own account.
- You can delete your account from your profile page. Deleting it removes it from our servers but does not delete files stored on your own PC.
4. Your files and your PC
- Your content is yours. We do not claim ownership of your photos, videos, files or messages, and we do not receive or access them. You grant us no licence to them, except that your own software on your own devices needs to read and move them to work.
- Your PC is the storage. You are responsible for the PC and drives that hold your files, for keeping them powered, connected, secure and in good order, and for keeping separate backup copies of anything you cannot afford to lose. Drives fail, PCs get lost and software has bugs.
- We are not responsible for lost files. Because we never hold your files, we cannot restore them if they are deleted, corrupted or lost on your devices. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not responsible for, and will not compensate you for, any loss, deletion, corruption or exposure of your files, photos, videos or messages, whatever the cause: a failed or lost drive or PC, a power cut, a mistake, a virus, a theft, a fault in our software or in a plugin, an update, a copy or sync that went wrong, a duplicate server that was removed or never finished copying, a lost password or recovery key, or the end of your plan or account. The 30-day Bin and the duplicate servers are conveniences, not backups that we promise.
- Encryption and recovery key. If you turn encryption on, your files are encrypted by your PC. We keep a recovery key for your account; if you lose access to your account and cannot use it, your encrypted files may be unrecoverable.
- Lawful content. You are responsible for what you store and share. Do not store or share content you have no right to, or that is unlawful.
5. Rules of use
You agree not to:
- break the law, or infringe anyone's rights, using the Service;
- store or share unlawful content, including content that exploits or endangers children;
- send spam, malware or harassing messages through the chat feature, or threaten, abuse, impersonate or defraud anyone;
- store or share material that is illegal where you live or where it is seen, or that you have no right to (including pirated or stolen material);
- share your account, sell access to the Service, or make a new account to get around a ban or a limit;
- use plugins, connected apps or share links to do any of the above or to harm other people or their devices;
- access, test or probe accounts, devices or systems that are not yours, or try to get around the plan limits, security or sign-in limits;
- reverse engineer, copy, resell or build a competing service from the software or website, except where the law allows it despite this term;
- overload or interfere with the Service, or use it in a way that could harm others.
Breaking these rules can lead to a ban: see Abuse and bans below.
6. Abuse and bans
We want DRL-FileSync to be safe for everyone. Abuse of the Service will result in action against your account, up to a permanent ban.
- What counts as abuse. Anything listed in the rules above, serious or repeated breaches of these Terms, attacks on or overloading of our systems or other people's devices, getting paid features without paying (for example with stolen payment details, misused codes or by tampering with the apps), harassment of other users through chat, share links or plugins, and payment disputes made in bad faith.
- What we may do. Depending on how serious it is, and without warning where the abuse is serious or the law requires it: warn you, limit features, suspend the account, unpair devices, remove share links, ban the account, its devices and email address permanently, refuse a new account from the same person, and report the matter to the authorities.
- What a ban means. Your right to use the Service ends and the apps stop working with our servers. Time you paid for is not refunded when the ban is caused by your breach, unless the law says otherwise. Files on your own PC stay on your PC: we cannot see or delete them.
- Appeals. If you think a ban or suspension was a mistake, write to us within 30 days from the email address of the account and say why. We look at every appeal in good faith. For serious abuse our decision is final, and nothing here takes away rights you have by law.
7. Plugins and apps you connect
DRL-FileSync can be extended with plugins, and can let another app use a folder of your storage (DRL-FileSync Connect). Plugins are separate apps made by us or by other people. They are installed beside DRL-FileSync, run as their own apps with their own permissions, and are not part of it.
- Your choice, your risk. You choose to install a plugin or to allow an app. We do not control what they do, and we do not promise that they are safe, correct, lawful or will keep working. Read the permissions Android and the Plugins page show, and install only what you trust.
- Our catalogue is not a guarantee. A plugin listed on our website has not been audited for you and is not endorsed by us. We may add, hide or remove a plugin at any time. Plugins installed from elsewhere can be used too; the app says so.
- Not our responsibility. A plugin or app has its own maker and its own terms, and a problem with it is between you and them. To the extent the law allows we are not responsible for loss or harm it causes, including loss of files, photos or videos. When DRL-FileSync closes unexpectedly it switches plugins off as a precaution; that is not a promise that a plugin is safe.
- If you make a plugin you must follow these Terms and the law, must not collect people's data in secret or damage their files or devices, and we may remove it and ban you if you do.
8. Sharing and reporting
- Share links. Anyone who has a share link can see what you shared until you remove the link or it ends. Share only what you may share and only with people you trust. We are not responsible for what happens to content you chose to share.
- Reporting. To report illegal content, abuse or a copyright problem, write to us at the address below with the link and what is wrong. The content itself stays on its owner's PC and we cannot see it, but we can remove a share link and suspend or ban an account. We end the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe other people's rights.
9. Plans, payments and promo codes
- Free and paid plans. The features and limits of each plan, including whether internet access is included and how many phones can connect to one PC, are described on our website and in the apps and can change over time. What your plan allows is checked by our servers.
- Prices and billing. Paid plans cost what is shown when you subscribe, for the period shown. Unless we say otherwise, a subscription runs for its period and ends when it is not renewed. If you pay through an app store or payment service, that provider's terms for billing, renewal and cancellation also apply.
- Price changes. We may change prices for future periods. We will give you notice, and a change will not affect a period you have already paid for.
- Refunds. Except where the law or the payment provider's rules say otherwise, payments are not refundable for the period already started. Nothing here limits any refund right you have by law.
- Promo codes. A code gives the access or discount stated with it, may be limited by date, number of uses and tier, has no cash value, cannot be sold, and may be withdrawn if it was misused. Time from a code is added to your subscription at that code's tier.
- When a plan ends. The Service continues on the free plan. Features that are not part of the free plan stop working until you subscribe again. Your files stay on your PC.
- Taxes. Prices may be shown with or without taxes as stated at checkout, and you are responsible for any taxes that apply to you.
10. The software
Subject to these Terms, we give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the Android app and the Windows program on devices you own or control, for your own use. We and our licensors keep all rights in the software, the website, the name DRL-FileSync and our logos. The software includes open-source components that are covered by their own licences, which apply to those components. Download the software only from our website or the official stores we publish it in, and keep it up to date.
11. Third-party services
The Service relies on things we do not control: your internet connection, your PC and phone, your network's settings, public STUN servers used for connection set-up, app stores, payment services and, if you use it, Google sign-in. Away from home, some networks block direct connections, so internet access may not work on every network. We are not responsible for those services, and their own terms and privacy policies apply to them.
12. Changes and availability
We work to keep the Service available, but it may be interrupted for maintenance, failures or reasons outside our control. We may improve, change, limit or discontinue features. If we end a paid feature you have paid for in advance, we will refund the unused part of that period unless the law or the payment provider's rules say otherwise.
13. Ending the agreement
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend, ban or end your access if you break these Terms (see Abuse and bans), if the law requires it, or if we stop offering the Service, and where reasonable we will tell you first. When the agreement ends, your right to use the software ends. Sections that by their nature should continue (for example 4, 6, 14, 15, 16 and 18) continue.
14. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we give no warranties, express or implied, including of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, or that files, photos or videos will never be lost or corrupted, or that duplicate servers, copying, the Bin or plugins will work without fault, or that the data of your account will be kept. Some places do not allow some of these exclusions, so they may not apply to you.
15. Limit of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of data, files, profits, revenue or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use the Service, including loss caused by failure or loss of your own PC, drives or phone. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the claim and (b) 100 US dollars (or its equivalent). Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
16. Your responsibility to us
To the extent the law allows, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and costs arising from claims by others that come from content you store or share using the Service, or from your breach of these Terms or of the law.
17. Laws and regulations
We follow the laws and regulations that apply to us and to the Service where we operate, and we expect the same from you. To comply, we may, where the law requires it and sometimes without telling you first: limit or end access (including in a country or region where the Service cannot lawfully be offered), remove a share link, keep records, and answer valid requests, orders and notices from courts, the police and regulators. We give them only what the law requires and what we actually hold, which is account and device records, not your files. You must follow the laws where you live and where you use the Service, including the rules about the content you store or share, other people's privacy in your photos, and export and sanctions rules. If a law makes part of these Terms unenforceable, the rest continues.
More than one country. We operate in more than one country. These Terms apply to everyone, but some countries give people rights that cannot be signed away (for example consumer protection, and refund or cancellation rights) and some require extra terms. Where a mandatory law of your country gives you more protection than a part of these Terms, that law applies to you instead of that part, and the rest stays. Where the law requires it, we show country-specific terms or notices on the website and in the apps. Features, plans, prices, taxes and payment methods can differ by country, and we may limit or stop the Service in a country where we cannot offer it lawfully, including because of sanctions or export rules.
18. Governing law
These Terms are governed by [add LEGAL_LAW in config.php]. Disputes will be handled by the courts named there, unless the law of the place where you live gives you the right to bring a claim elsewhere. If you use the Service as a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live and may bring a claim in the courts of that country. Please contact us first so we can try to solve a problem informally.
19. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms. We will change the "last updated" date and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or by email before they apply. If you keep using the Service after the change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms. If you do not agree, stop using the Service and delete your account.
20. General
These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about the Service. If a part is found unenforceable, the rest continues. Not enforcing a right is not giving it up. If we offer a translation of these Terms it is for convenience: the English text decides, unless the law of your country says otherwise. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms without our consent; we may transfer ours as part of a sale or reorganisation of the business.
